AstroBoy Rig

Completed October, 2025

AstroBoy is a concept I came up with when tasked with 3D modeling a character and completing a rig for them. AstroBoy is a young boy who wears an abnormally large astronaut suit and finds himself going on space adventures. For the character, I ended up modeling and defining details in ZBrush, retopologizing the mesh in Maya, and creating the skeleton, IK handles, controls, and overall animation in Maya. I felt that this project allowed me to see a character come to life from start to finish, and ultimately have a newfound understanding and appreciation for the craft of rigging a dynamic character. 

Storyboards

Below contains the brief storyboard that plays out the actions in which the character will be taking once the skeleton and overall rig is completed. The concept consists of the boy walking and then floating in the air due to a lack of gravity before eventually falling back down to the ground.

FINAL ANIMATION

The final consists of a combination of elements in Maya. Within the animation, you can see the boy floating in the air where his arms, legs, torso, and head slightly move in slow and intentional movements using controls that were constrained onto the model's rig.
